Math Moderation - Tautoro School

Tautoro School Math Moderation

             Term 1                                                                 Term 2

I've come to realise the importance of understanding student data.  It is the basis in which we collaboratively set goals as a school, a syndicate, a teacher, and therefore, as students.  We strive to strategically plan effective learning experiences for our students.

As a leader of mathematics, it's important to provide professional learning opportunities for your team and colleagues so they too become proficient in the long-term implementation of effective practices of mathematics.

We're fortunate enough to be part of the Kaikohekohe Education Network, which at the moment is focusing on moderating mathematics.  We've designed a student recording sheet that captures the student's thinking.  Furthermore, a teacher's recording sheet that highlights signposts that align with the Math Learning Progressions Framework (LPF's).  Our focus at Tautoro School is the 'multiplicative thinking' aspect of the progressions framework.

Math leaders (Kayil & I) will model how to use these sheets.  Then teachers will select a student from their classroom to assess - preferably someone whose current level in mathematics is unknown.

Once we all have a math sample to share, we will come together and discuss the varying knowledge, skills, and strategies displayed, and identify which signpost each student would be placed at and why.  The signpost descriptions will help us identify their next steps and plan accordingly.

One key question I find myself thinking about consistently from Leading to the North-East is,

"How well are team leaders/teachers able to set goals for their own learning and for the learning of those whose learning they are responsible for?" (Bishop, 2023, p.58).

Discussions when moderating as a school will hopefully allow us to think about the progressions of math learners, and as a result, know what 'big ideas or key math concepts' to focus on in their learner's IEP.
