Growth Cycle 2022

This year I have decided to focus on how to design and implement an effective literacy programme in Te Reo Maori.

Rationale:

My colleagues and I are struggling to deliver an effective Level 2 Te Reo programme. I feel that this year we’re going in blind without having a strong content base of knowledge, strategies, and expectations in Panui, Tuhituhi, Korero. Level 2 is a huge step up from Level 3.

I'm also finding examples online of what other Kura use and do, which is extremely difficult.

This is why I have decided to focus on designing and implementing an effective literacy programme of Te Reo Maori at Level 2. The programme will then be a crucial resource for all teachers of Level 2 going forward.

Strategies: Over the course of this year I will implement several strategies and capture their effectiveness within my classroom. I will share my successes, struggles and general reflections. These include (but are not limited to...)

  • Becoming familiar with the Curriculum documents

  • Te Aho Arataki Marau

  • Te Marautanga

  • He Ara Ako i te Reo Matatini

  • Te Whanaketanga

  • Become familiar with the assessment processes and tools for Te Reo in pānui, tuhituhi, tūtaki reo.

  • Understand the progressions in te reo Māori tuhituhi - how to level a students piece of writing.

  • Design a template to measure student engagement in Te Reo e.g., number of words the students know.

  • Use animations to support student understanding of everyday conversations in Te Reo.

  • Implement puna kupu - high frequency sight word lists for my students as an additional part of their spelling programme.

  • Establish regular reading of panui pukapuka at level Harakeke/KKa/KKe

  • Build and develop words of particular interest to my students’ everyday life.

  • Normalise instructional phrases in te reo within the classroom and out in the playground, e.g. whakahokia mai ngā rauemi; whakatūria ngā turu.

  • Provide engaging rauemi that support and encourage differentiated learning opportunities for my students - māoriminute, kauwhata reo, nga kete kōrero, podcasts (te whanake)....Ōpaki.

  • 10 min weekly observations capturing “talk time” i te reo Māori.  Measured by how many students and for how long.

  • Visit Kura and/or enquire into how they track student progress and achievement in Tuhituhi.

Expected Outcomes:

I will confidently …

Design and plan an effective literacy programme at Level 2 Te Reo Maori that reflects the local community and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in New Zealand.

Select teaching approaches, resources, and learning and assessment activities based on a growing knowledge of Te Aho Arataki Marau content, pedagogy, He Ara Ako i te Reo Matatini progressions in learning and the learners.

Use an increasing repertoire of teaching strategies, approaches, learning activities, technologies and assessment for learning strategies and modify these in response to the needs of individuals and groups of learners based on our Level 2 Literacy programme.

Gather, analyse and use appropriate assessment information, identifying the progress and needs of learners (according to the literacy progressions - He Ara Ako i te Reo Matatini) to design clear next steps in learning and to identify additional supports or adaptations that may be required.

In all honesty - I'm nervous but excited about the journey this growth cycle will lead me through. It helps that this is something I'm extremely passionate about.

Ngā mihi
Na Gaylene Young
